This year at NTU has been a transformative period, both academically and personally, as I built on opportunities enabled by the Opportunity Bursary, which paved the way for my placement year in criminal law. The bursary’s impact has been profound, shaping my journey and future aspirations.
The GAP Developmental Programme I completed in the previous academic year allowed me to explore new areas of law and ignited my passion for the criminal justice system. A standout moment for me was attending an HMPPS event, where I gained invaluable insights into the complexities of criminal justice. These experiences inspired me to pursue a placement year as a legal assistant in criminal defence—an opportunity that has been nothing short of life-changing. With guidance from my GAP mentor and the commercial awareness gained from networking with professionals at Open Days, I navigated the recruitment process with confidence and secured this incredible role.
My placement has offered hands-on experience in courtrooms, police stations, prisons, and legal offices. These experiences have given me a comprehensive understanding of the justice system and its challenges, particularly the systemic inequalities faced by marginalised individuals. Witnessing the tangible impact of thorough legal representation has solidified my aspiration to address these disparities and pursue a career as a solicitor.
Beyond academics and career development, the bursary has supported my personal growth. It enabled me to join a dance team in my placement city, which has been a vital outlet for stress relief and personal expression. Balancing my passion for dance with my demanding placement has helped me maintain a well-rounded lifestyle.
Additionally, I’ve expanded my professional network as a Student Ambassador with the Sikhs in Law Association, where I’ve engaged with peers and professionals and contributed to promoting networking opportunities. These experiences have been instrumental in refining my career goals and understanding the expectations within the legal profession.
The Opportunity Bursary has not only supported my journey but has empowered me to pursue a placement that has been pivotal in shaping my future. It has strengthened my skills, reinforced my passion for criminal law, and instilled confidence in my ability to succeed. I am profoundly grateful for the transformative impact of this bursary, which has been integral to my growth and aspirations.
