The skills that make me an effective manager were largely shaped during my Masters studies. Beyond academic knowledge, the experience helped me grow personally, building self-worth, confidence, and resilience. The lessons I learned extended beyond the classroom.
More about Emily
Emily studied BSc Psychology and MSc Occupational Psychology here at NTU. She now works as a National Property Development Manager for a large UK organisation.
Why did you choose to study a postgraduate degree?
"In the spring of my final undergraduate year at NTU, I attended a postgraduate open day without the intention of pursuing a Masters degree - I simply wanted to explore my future options. However, the insights shared by Mark and John (lecturers on the course) completely shifted my perspective. They explained that while work experience provides practical skills, a Masters degree offers a deeper understanding of the reasoning behind individual and organisational decisions made and their broader impact. I realised that the combination of advanced knowledge and practical skills gained during a Psychology Masters - such as critical thinking, data analysis, and applying evidence-based strategies to improve performance at work - can significantly enhance your career trajectory in ways that a single year of work experience cannot."
Why did you choose MSc Occupational Psychology at NTU?
"During my final undergraduate year, I chose Occupational Psychology as a module, and it quickly became the highlight of my week. The diverse experiences and insights shared by the lecturers, combined with the interactive format, made the subject both engaging and memorable. Discussions encouraged us to connect theories with our own perspectives and experiences, making the material relatable and easier to grasp. To my delight, the same interactive and enriching approach was carried through into the Masters program."
Tell us about your memories of NTU, were there any highlights?
"I thoroughly enjoyed my Masters experience, with a standout moment unexpectedly being the Learning, Training and Development presentation assessment. For this task, I designed and pitched a training plan to improve individual and organisational performance within a not-for-profit organisation, presenting to lecturers acting as stakeholders. From exploring the training cycle and researching not-for-profit organisations to delivering the presentation, the entire process was both insightful and rewarding. This experience improved my confidence in public speaking and inspired me to pursue a career in training and development. The Masters program is filled with opportunities like this, where you can develop practical, career-ready skills directly applicable to the workplace."
Were you involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that supplemented your studies?
"As a Course Representative, I took on a role I never thought I’d have the confidence to pursue. It was an honour to represent my peers, share their insights, and propose solutions to enhance the course. This experience allowed me to develop essential communication skills, particularly in confidently engaging with individuals in higher positions - a skill that has proven invaluable in my current role and workplace interactions."
How did NTU support you during your studies?
"The support from the tutors and staff at NTU was exceptional. Each lecturer took the time to connect with us individually, creating an unparalleled sense of support within an educational setting. My personal tutor provided invaluable guidance both academically and personally, ensuring I always felt supported. When choosing a research project topic, I approached a lecturer outside of their tutoring commitments due to their expertise in the field. Despite their busy schedule, they dedicated hours to discussing my ideas, which left me feeling inspired and empowered."
Did you find it easy to settle in at NTU?
"I found it easier to make quality friendships while studying my Masters. The cohort was small so it meant we got to know each other on a genuine, personal level. We created a WhatsApp group chat where we frequently discussed university and social events, fostering a culture of support and inclusion in the classroom. These relationships formed during my Masters are true connections that I hope to cherish for a lifetime."
Tell us about your current role.
"I recently began my graduate role as a National Property Development Manager for a large UK organisation, where I apply many skills gained during my Masters. These include critical thinking, understanding the training cycle, and recognising individuals' unique learning styles to drive development effectively. I am excited to further my career in occupational psychology by leveraging the experiences and insights from this role, particularly in learning, training, and development, to pursue my passion in the field."
How did NTU help you to achieve your career goals?
"The skills that make me an effective manager were largely shaped during my Masters studies. Beyond academic knowledge, the experience helped me grow personally, building self-worth, confidence, and resilience. The lessons I learned extended beyond the classroom, preparing me both professionally and personally. Even after completing my studies, the support from my lecturers remains invaluable, as they continue to offer guidance. As the Masters is BPS accredited, it also provides a pathway for me to advance further, enabling me to pursue the Level 2 Qualification in Occupational Psychology."
"The employability team at NTU has been an incredible resource throughout my studies. They frequently reach out via email, and I often used their services while job hunting. Their resources are accessible and easy to use, and I had the opportunity to meet with them both online and in-person. Every interaction left me feeling motivated and reassured, knowing there is always a way forward and that the team genuinely wants to help you succeed."
What does Social Sciences mean to you?
"The study of social sciences is integral to understanding all aspects of life - work, social, and personal development. Delving deeper into this field is crucial for human progress, especially in today’s rapidly evolving society. Learning to apply and understand evidence-based practices has transformed my perspective, making me a more well-rounded, considerate, and understanding individual."
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
"The diverse modules in the Masters program were incredibly insightful, helping me identify the specific area of occupational psychology I want to pursue in the future. It felt like experiencing different roles within a work placement, providing exposure to areas I might not have encountered otherwise. In just one year, I grew more academically and personally than I did during my entire three years as an undergraduate. My experience at NTU was so impactful that I wholeheartedly encourage anyone to consider pursuing a Masters degree."
