Postgraduate Sports Science student, Nathan Wood

Nathan completed his MRes in Sport and Exercise Psychology at NTU and is now currently completing his PhD with the thesis title of 'Examining the feasibility of physically active lessons within UK primary schools, and their impact on cognitive function, academic achievement, and well-being’.

Why did you choose to study postgraduate at NTU

Having already undergone my undergraduate degree in Psychology with Criminology at NTU, I was extremely familiar with the strong teaching practices within NTU departments and staff. I was also aware of the great facilities and resources, particularly within the sport science department.

What was the highlight of course?

Being awarded the "best project prize" for my research project. My research project examined the associations between self-control, and physical activity, physical fitness, cardiometabolic health, and well-being for children and young people aged 9-14 years.  The award was announced during my graduation at the same time as I was awarded my postgraduate degree.

Did studying a postgraduate course help develop your skills?

Yes studying a postgraduate course definitely helped. As I am now undertaking a PhD within the SHAPE (hyperlink to webpage) research centre here at NTU, my time studying greatly helped to develop academic skills I use every day while completing my PhD. My PhD thesis title is 'Examining the feasibility of physically active lessons within UK primary schools, and their impact on cognitive function, academic achievement, and well-being'.

What are your future career plans?

I would like to complete my PhD and then go on to become a research fellow/lecturer. My goal is to become a lecturer within Sport and Exercise Psychology. I wish to do this due to a strong desire to pursue a career within academia. This has been influenced by great experiences during my masters degree. I have also been inspired by working closely with staff members within the sport science department at NTU.

What advice do you have for others?

My advice to other students would be to say yes to every opportunity that presents itself, for example, getting involved in the data collection of other ongoing studies helped me to further develop essential skills for my chosen career path.
