More about Leah

Why did you choose to study at NTU?

The course offered a wide variety of interesting subjects to study such as Immunology, Infectious Disease and their Control and the opportunity to conduct a research project. The University is also located in a vibrant city with easy access to lots of amenities and social activities. The University had also invested a lot of money in facilities including the laboratories, accommodation and lecture theatres which made NTU more attractive.

What did you think of the support available from staff and others at NTU?

Support from course tutors within NTU were fantastic, course leader Jody Winter was extremely supportive when it came to coursework, day-to-day learning, and preparing you for the working world.  All the lecturers were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and made an effort to make learning interesting. Staff around the university at both campuses (Clifton and City) were also great at providing useful advice on any questions, queries or concerns to always make you feel at ease.

What was the highlight of your course?

Highlights include my research project whereby I was given the opportunity to work in a newly built laboratory to work on research topics that mattered, both the practical and theoretical experience gained from doing a research project has helped me throughout my career within pharmaceuticals and healthcare industry since graduating. The biggest highlight was the ability to study aboard, instead of doing a work-based placement, studying aboard not only allowed me to gain extra knowledge within biosciences but also allowed me to gain exposure to a different culture, live in a new environment and make lots of new friends. In addition, the study aboard program allows you to gain an extra qualification in the form of a diploma but has also helped me stand out when applying for jobs as it is often a topic of discussion during interviews with prospective employers.

What is your current job role?

I am currently a Quality Compliance Manager and Responsible Person at a pharmaceutical company Dexcel Pharma Limited. I am responsible for maintaining Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Distribution Practices (GDP) for medicinal products, maintenance of the companies Quality Management Systems, Project Management and RP release of medicinal products and medical devices. My day-to-day involves RP release of medicines to market, conducting audits at large contract manufacturers, working with large distributors and leading continuous improvement projects.

What did you learn while you were at NTU, and what inspired you to follow your chosen career path?

I learnt key analytical and testing skills, written communication, problem solving and critical thinking but also how to live independently. Initially I was inspired to work within a testing environment in a laboratory due to how much I enjoyed my research project. However, after my first role post graduating, I realised my degree had allow me to work within manufacturing environments in various Quality, Regulatory and Technical roles.  My degree also enabled me to lead major projects to improve sterile manufacturing processes and aseptic compounding.
