More about Cynthia

What inspired you to choose your course?

"I was inspired to study this course because I had a personal experience looking after my mum when she was diagnosed with early dementia and was admitted to hospital. She denied all personal care from both the nurses and the healthcare assistants. I had to be the one to go into the hospital every day to give her some personal care. That was when one of the nurses asked me if I would like to be a nurse as she had seen how well I'd looked after my mum."

Can you tell me about any interests or passions that led you to choose this field?

"There are a lot of negative stereotypes attached to people suffering with their mental health. I do not only want to help those suffering from mental health issues but also to become a voice that raises awareness on how to support or treat people. Taking care of my mum who was ill before she passed away made me understand more about what people with mental health issues suffer by working alongside the doctors, nurses and some other healthcare professionals. I became an advocate for my mum. I saw how the nurses worked tirelessly to ensure she received all the necessary treatments. I learnt compassion, patience, and care -essential qualities to be a good nurse when I qualify."

How is this course contributing to your personal or career goals?

"This course is giving me the skills, experience and accreditation required to provide high-quality mental health care. I have had a six-week placement working closely with adults with depression, anxiety and dementia. It has exposed me to the clinical part of my profession. I am more confident of fulfilling my dream of being a qualified mental health nurse."

What distinguishes the Mansfield Hub from other study locations or campuses?

"I love studying at the Mansfield Hub because of the compact site and close-knit community. The small class sizes at the Mansfield Hub make it like a little family where we know the staff and students by name."

Could you share any experiences or interactions at the Mansfield Hub that have been particularly impactful for you?

"I was involved in the European Challenge 2024 organised by the university and the Mansfield community. This project involved staff and students travelling to three European countries to carry out research."

What’s the best thing about being an NTU Mansfield student?

"The opportunity of having access to the local community to organise work-like experiences for students."

Why did you choose to apply to NTU Mansfield through clearing?

"The course I'd initially chosen to study was no longer taking applications, so I applied to the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) course at NTU in Mansfield. I got an email and then spoke over the phone to the staff at NTU.

I was required to send over documentation and confirm if I had previous work experience relating to the course. I was then offered a place and asked to go to UCAS to accept my offer, which I did."
