The Opportunity Bursary didn’t just support me financially, it gave me the chance to grow as a leader and build lifelong skills
More about Imogen
Since graduating from NTU, I have now begun my career as a Year 1 teacher, and I absolutely love it. Teaching is such a rewarding job, and every day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a difference in children’s lives. Looking back, I can see how much my time volunteering with Girlguiding prepared me for this role.
Thanks to the Opportunity Bursary I received in my final year, I was able to fully commit to my role as a Brownie and Rainbow leader. This wasn’t just a chance to give back to the community, but a place where I built skills that have been instrumental in my teaching career. Leading Brownies and Rainbows taught me how to plan engaging activities, manage groups of children with varying needs and personalities, and create a positive, nurturing environment where every child feels valued. These experiences gave me the confidence and practical skills to handle a busy classroom and adapt to the unique needs of each of my students.
What I learned through Girlguiding has shaped so much of how I approach teaching. From encouraging teamwork to fostering independence, I find myself using techniques I first practised with Brownies and Rainbows every day. These skills were also a key part of securing my teaching role. During interviews, I could draw on real-life examples of leadership, organisation, and communication, all of which I developed as a Brownie and Rainbow leader.
The Opportunity Bursary didn’t just support me financially, it gave me the chance to grow as a leader and build lifelong skills. It’s incredible to see how those experiences have carried over into the early stages of my teaching career. I’m so grateful to NTU and the Girlguiding community for helping me get to where I am today.
