I get the opportunity to attend some incredible events, whether that’s working the red carpet at the Pride of Britain Awards or interviewing and filming at political party conferences.
More about Kate
After completing a Media and Film & TV BA in 2020, Kate Moseley has gone on to become a Video Editor for one of the UK’s largest newspaper groups. Kate discusses what attracted her to NTU, her current day, and the biggest highlights of her career so far.
Why did you choose to study at NTU?
When I was deciding which university to attend after finishing up at sixth form, I didn’t have a particular one in mind. However, after visiting NTU’s campus and visiting one of their open days for this course, I was completely hooked. I was really interested in what they had to offer and it was the first course that got me excited about learning.
What did you learn – both inside and outside of lectures?
Throughout my time at university, I really did learn more about myself. I was able to figure out my interests, as well as my likes and dislikes. Due to this, my confidence flourished and I felt confident enough to participate in lectures and seminars. This also extended outside of lectures. I felt confident enough to join societies and to meet new people.
What does your current day involve?
I work at Reach PLC, which is one of the UK’s largest newspaper groups. I specifically work with the national sites, including the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Daily Star, OK! and more. Throughout my day, I will get a variety of different video requests ranging from light-hearted content, to hard breaking news. With these requests, I will then edit up videos to be used in articles on our sites. Some video edits are simpler than others, whereas some require closer attention to detail, especially any involving legal issues.
Throughout the day, we also need to receive permission to use UGC (user-generated content) for our sites, which could be for any viral stories or breaking news.
We also sort out livestreams for our sites, which could be anything from political statements to press conferences.
What attracted you to this field of work?
I have always been interested in editing videos, whether it’s more of a simplistic edit, or a piece of content that requires more attention to detail so that it’s executed to a high standard. I find that editing videos enables me to express my creativity and my passion for telling stories.
What challenges have you faced?
The biggest challenges I have faced are when plans have changed and it has meant that I need to adapt in order to get an end result. Although it may require more work to meet my objective, it is imperative in any industry to be ready when things don’t go as planned.
What have been the highlights and biggest challenges of your career so far?
The highlight I would have to say is that I get the opportunity to attend some incredible events, whether that’s working the red carpet at the Pride of Britain Awards or interviewing and filming at political party conferences. These events are a great way to learn more about the industry and to really get involved.
The biggest challenge I would say is that there are times when things don’t work out the way you would intend, so it’s important to be adaptable as plans can change instantly.
What are your plans for the future?
At the moment, I’m not too sure what the future holds for me. I would like to work in TV in the future, but for now I’m happy where I am!
If you had a time machine, what would you go back and tell yourself at uni?
I would probably tell myself to not stress as much because most things tend to work themselves out. I would also say to savour every moment because it was an incredible experience.
Choosing just one subject to study at university can be a challenge! If you’re stuck weighing up different subjects, a Joint Honours course could be the ideal solution!
