More about Martina

Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?

I didn’t enjoy my previous course and wanted to try something different. Looking at different animal related biology courses, this one at NTU was the best fit for me.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I find the course material itself very interesting. I feel like now I just have a bunch of very fun animal facts that I can share with my friends and family. They always think it’s very cool and interesting when I tell them about what I am learning. I also feel like it’s a very well-rounded course, that covers a range of topics in good detail.

How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying?

I have found the modules the right amount of challenging. I feel like they have given me a very well-rounded education when it comes to animal biology.

What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?

I think the facilities provided are very nice. The lecture halls always have enough space to seat everyone (which isn’t common in some other courses in different universities) and I feel that everything provided is very easy to use.

What do you think about Brackenhurst Campus? What do you get up to in your spare time?

I think Brackenhurst is quite secluded from the other campuses, however, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This allows for a calm study environment, and makes it enjoyable to go to university, as it isn’t loud and overcrowded. In free time between lectures, I enjoy going to the Orangery or the library, and then sometimes exploring Southwell.

What is your top tip for someone considering studying/living at Brackenhurst Campus?

If you live off-campus, be prepared to travel quite a bit for lectures. I personally have a car which makes it more manageable to get there. This also means being more proactive and judging whether it is worth it going out the night before, as you will need to on average wake up about 1.5 hours before other students, just to get to your lectures.

Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?

I believe that the content covered is very interesting, and I also think there is a very wide variety of content covered. I think after studying this course you will have a broad range of knowledge that prepares you for many master’s courses, if you choose to continue studying.

What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has/ will help you to achieve that goal?

I am going to be studying a master’s degree in either Neuroscience or Cancer Cell Biology. I feel like modules such as the various physiology modules, along with the genetics modules are helping me a lot with core knowledge I will need. Additionally, I have been granted the opportunity to do a dissertation in collaboration with UoN in regard to sequencing the genome of retrovirus in red squirrels, which will give me a lot of wet lab experience, along with more in depth knowledge about RStudio and the genome in general.

Any additional comments?

I have really enjoyed my time at Brackenhurst and feel like I have learned a lot of fun new information. I also feel like it has prepared me well for my future and what I want to study after my undergraduate.
