On the Veterinary Nursing course there are multiple placements that you go on which go side by side with what you are studying on the course. Ensuring that I asked questions and got involved where I could in these built up my confidence and aided me with my learning.

More about Brandon

Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?

After attending open days, NTU was the university that stood out especially due to the Brackenhurst Campus and the facilities it had for veterinary nursing students. The campus has a homely feel to it, which was something I was looking for due to moving out of a small town and not wanting the big jump to living in the city.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

Practical sessions and being out on placement are my favourite parts as I feel this is how I learn best.

How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying?

The modules are all great at giving a breakdown of each component of veterinary nursing and aid in applying this within placement. For example, the lectures are all recorded, and the PowerPoints are readily available to you on the NOW page ensuring that you can always refer to previous learning moments. My favourite module was Surgical Nursing and Theatre Practice as I really enjoy this within practice.

What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?

The facilities are amazing at Brackenhurst as there is a whole Animal Unit with all the equipment you need which is utilised for practical sessions. I personally used to use the library and the orangery (café) most as it is where I used to go to study/socialise when on campus.

What do you think about Brackenhurst Campus? What do you get up to in your spare time?

I think Brackenhurst Campus is perfect for those that do not like the busyness of the city and like quiet when trying to study for their courses. I did live in the city second year too which I did enjoy but would say being on Brackenhurst first year did improve my studying. In my spare time, I worked at the orangery and socialised with friends going out into the city. The veterinary nursing course also offers the opportunity to volunteer for Vets in the Community and I was able to do this which enables you to socialise with veterinary students and share ideas/ways of working.

What is your top tip for someone considering studying/ living at Brackenhurst Campus?

Throwing yourself into the experience will aid in you having a better time whilst studying and living at Brackenhurst and do not be scared to use the facilities that are available to you. The campus has loads of activities that arise throughout the years and the bar has themed nights out which is usually a good laugh. Bring warm clothes and hardy shoes for the walk to the Animal Unit especially in the winter.

Have you been involved in any placements, work experience or volunteering as part of your course? If so, what did you do and what did you achieve?

On the Veterinary Nursing course there are multiple placements that you go on which go side by side with what you are studying on the course. Ensuring that I asked questions and got involved where I could in these built up my confidence and aided me with my learning.

Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?

I would recommend this course as the lecturers are all extremely helpful and will go out of their way to ensure you are understanding and keeping up with their modules, as well as having 1-2-1 sessions with your tutor to check in on how you are getting on. In addition, students on the campus mostly study courses that have similar interests which makes it easier to form friendships whilst studying there.

What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has/ will help you to achieve that goal?

My plan after university is to work as a Registered Veterinary Nurse within small animal practices to further my knowledge before moving on to my next challenge. Currently, I am undecided but I do have an interest in moving more into exotics and also work my way up to be a head nurse. This course has allowed me to build a strong foundation within the industry whilst keeping up with new legislation and gold standard practices to achieve my goals in the future.

Once settled within a job I would love to take time out to travel and volunteer abroad to help with conservation and wildlife projects.
