Caitlen Petrie-Chilvers, Level 4 HNC Future Homes and Design Apprentice
Caitlen Petrie-Chilvers, Assistant Architect Technician, studying for a Level 4 HNC Future Homes and Design apprenticeship, shares her experience and tips for future apprentices.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I had an offer for a traditional degree (accepted at Lincoln BA Architecture) and also had the opportunity to study for an apprenticeship. My interview at Persimmon Homes enabled me to get an understanding of the apprenticeship - I wanted practical experience and learning at the same time therefore I chose this route.
I went to an open day at NTU Mansfield, during my time at West Notts College. West Notts College, The tutors were friendly and answered all of my questions.
What made you decide to study at NTU Mansfield?
The campus has a great reputation, with NTU highly rated for Architecture in the UK. It is is really local and easy to go there and to the city. My course is the exact one that I needed for this apprenticeship, in order for me to progress.
What drew you to working with your current employer?
I heard about them on the radio and adverts on TV, plus there’s a site next to me, I've always had an interest in architecture and my employer has been supportive - every day I learn something new. Presently, I am the youngest employee in the company.
What does an average week look like?
I am responsible from drawing a site plan up and deciding what materials each house needs, alongside checking for problems. I also visit active sites. Technical (our team), commercial, sales, construction all come together in meetings to plan and work on sites. We also have meetings with manufacturers making the materials and components of houses.
What new skills have you gained?
I have developed better communication skills, priority management and to be organised. My role is busy, with lots of different tasks from different people. Being able to prioritise has meant that my confidence has improved.
How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current role and future career?
The role is giving me the knowledge and experience to succeed, and the course giving me the right qualification.
I have also secured a promotion in 18 months and have benefited from some good opportunities.
How have you balanced studying alongside your professional role?
My employer has helped with the key deliverables for my course course. It can be challenging at times, but I get time within our university week with tutors to help us and complete work, Balancing work and studies has required me to be extremely disciplined and get a good routine.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship at NTU Mansfield?
I have found studying here so far exciting, enjoyable, interesting and engaging. You have access to really good support from tutors and a good mix of study and work. You can also build good links to employers to help facilitate your course. I would recommend studying here to anyone.
What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
Do it, take the step, it’s a big step, but I've got no regrets. I'm really glad I made the choice vs the degree, if you want hands on experience with learning its perfect. I have received great support from both my employer and the University and i'm excited to continue my journey.
