Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

To continue being able to work and combine academic study with professional development.

Why did you choose to study at NTU?

It felt like the best suited university that offered my degree part time. I was also impressed with how they assist with the transition between academic study and work life, continually relating teaching back to application within a professional setting.

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current job role and future career?

Positively – I have progressed onto the next grade of professional membership and I’m hoping to become chartered in the next few years. The teaching and support staff have been fantastic.

How have you balanced studying alongside your professional role?

It’s been a challenge at times, requiring long weekends and evenings. The crucial aspect has been time management – I needed to plan my work careful to ensure things were all submitted within required deadlines. My employer have been very supportive, offering assistance and guidance where necessary and being flexible through-out.

What is your favourite thing about your apprenticeship?

It has allowed me insight and experience of other parts of civil engineering and develop relationships with other engineers in different sectors. This has given me a greater appreciation of different input into projects.

What skills and experience have you gained as part of this apprenticeship? Has there been anything that you were not expecting?

Academically the apprenticeship provided a useful overview of different areas of civil engineering that I’m not actively engaged with. The apprenticeship community surprised me a little - everyone was really supportive of each other, which was particularly important as we tended to complete assignments at different times to full time students

What advice would you give to anyone considering an apprenticeship?

I would strongly recommend an apprenticeship. It’s a way to fast-track your career and demonstrate a number of skills that employers are looking for.

The more you put into your apprenticeship, the more you will get out – there are a lot of opportunities available to expand your skills/experience and it’s down to you to make the most of them.

Finally, if you could describe your apprenticeship in 5 words, what would they be?

Intense, interesting, engaging, valuable, rewarding.
