Which Product Design course is right for you?

This handy guide highlights the differences between our undergraduate Product Design courses, to help you choose the right route for you.

What is Product Design?

Product design is a discipline, a unique one where creativity and technology meet, and innovation thrives. We’ll give you the tools you’ll need to develop as a creative and analytical thinker, and the freedom to discover and develop your own individual design style, vision and philosophy.

Our courses

We offer three courses, all of which also have the option of a Foundation Year.

BSc (Hons) Product Design

This course focuses on the underlying technology of product design, exploring the design of sustainable products for manufacturing, digital, industrial, electronics, and medical applications.

BA (Hons) Product Design

This course focuses on the design of products, systems and services, including consumer goods, digital and electronic devices, sustainable products, sports, medical and healthcare equipment, packaging, and transportation.

BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design

The course specifically focuses on furniture, lighting and interior/ exterior sustainable products for the home and contract markets.

What are the similarities between these courses?

  • Sandwich year - each of these three courses offer a placement year option
  • Accreditation* - our courses are accredited, ensuring they are up-to-date and industry-relevant
  • Industry links - all courses have great industry links and offer multiple opportunities to work on live projects
  • Student Showcase - all of these courses allow you to exhibit your work in your final year Student Showcase
  • No exams - you'll be assessed through a variety of other methods including coursework, project work, and much more
  • Central location - they are all based on our City Campus in the heart of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé
  • Excellent facilities - all give you access to our world-class facilities

What are the differences between these courses?

  • Entry requirements - differ for each course and you need to submit a portfolio and attend an interview for our BA Product Design and BA Furniture and Product Design courses. You will not need to submit a portfolio or attend an interview for the BSc Product Design course.
    Note: Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé applicants to the BA courses do not attend an interview.

Foundation degrees

Your Foundation Year introduces you to the skills you’ll need to prepare you for your future studies. From perfecting freehand drawing and sketchbook use to learning about materials and fabrication, you’ll gain practical experience through real-world briefs and develop your confidence in presenting your ideas.

Entry requirements

Each of our Foundation degrees has lower entry requirements to our main programmes. There is also no requirement to submit a portfolio for any of the Foundation courses.

Foundation Year modules

The three courses have a shared Foundation Year, you will cover:

  • Materials and Making
  • Future Living
  • Client, Object, Space

*Foundation courses are seeking accreditation.
