Role

Gareth is the strategic lead for international, student recruitment, and strategy for the School of Social Sciences.

He oversees the international portfolio for the School of Social Sciences. As part of NTU’s University, reimagined Connecting Globally ambition, he works to empower colleagues and partners to create sustainable opportunities in student and academic mobility. He chairs the School’s Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Committee and is the University Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Committee school representative. He has a scholarship interest in digital mobility and supports colleagues in developing Collaborative Online Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Learning opportunities.

Gareth also leads student recruitment portfolio planning for the school. He works with the school’s six departments to build student forecast models that inform course marketing and teaching planning.

Career overview

Gareth led the resource and planning portfolio for the School of Social Sciences from 2020 to 2024. During this time, he also oversaw the school’s commercial development and Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Civic Exchange. He is also the former Management Lead for the Department of Psychology.

He has a teaching background in developmental psychology and statistics and received the Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award in 2018. He continues to be research active, with a focus on cognitive development in writing and spelling.

An Associate Professor, he has a significant academic track record of leadership in teaching and scholarship.

Research areas

Gareth is involved in the following research projects:

  • Exploring the spelling and written language skills of children with Developmental Language Disorder
  • Written language skills in primary and secondary school students, and the links these skills have with reading and cognition
  • Developmental predictors and association of Developmental Coordination Disorder

Gareth supervises projects that explore how language and cognition relate to reading, spelling, and writing skills, often from a developmental or bilingual perspective. Primarily, his work involves quantitative and experimental methodologies.
