Role

Amanda Colclough is the Course Lead for the MA Advanced Social Work Practice at NTU. She is also a Module Lead across a number of courses within the Department of Social Work, Care and Community. She teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate level on subject areas such as ‘Preparation for Professional Social Work Practice’, ‘Assessment and Intervention’, Rights, Ethics and Safeguarding’ and the Best Interests Assessor module. In addition to teaching, she is also a personal tutor for students across the social work programmes.

Career overview

Amanda is a registered social worker, having qualified with an MA Social Work from the University of Leicester in 1996. Since qualifying she has worked predominantly in the field of adult mental health, responsible for the support of people living with mental health difficulties in the community. She has worked in both London, and later Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé, as an Approved Social Worker (ASW) responsible for the assessment and admission of people to hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983. She has also previously practiced as Practice Educator (PE) for social work students. She is a qualified Best Interests Assessor (BIA), a specialist role under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and worked as a Senior Practitioner in the Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé City Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Team.


Prior to her current role at NTU, Amanda worked to support qualified and student social workers in developing their skills for practice, in a variety of settings including workforce development at Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé City Council, and as the Practice Learning Manager at the University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé.

External activity

Amanda currently continues to work as an Independent Best Interests Assessor (BIA).
