Role
Dr Winter is the subject leader for microbiology teaching at NTU and a member of the research group. Dr Winter is Course Leader for the BSc and MBiol Microbiology courses and Module Leader for the Host-Pathogen Interactions module. Her main research interests are antimicrobial resistance, Helicobacter pylori, bacterial membrane vesicles and antimicrobial stewardship.
Career overview
Dr Winter completed a PhD in parasite immunology and vaccine design at The University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé in 2004. She then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at The University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé until 2014 on projects including:
- cloning and expression of fluorescently labelled synuclein proteins for the development of in vitro and in vivo models of protein aggregation in Parkinson's disease,
- cloning, expression and characterisation (X-ray crystallography, protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions) of proteins involved in bacterial and archaeal DNA replication.
- H. pylori toxin and membrane vesicle roles in immune modulation and pathogenicity
Alongside her research, she has worked in a variety of teaching roles including demonstrating at The University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé 2001-2006, and Associate Lecturer at The Open University 2009-2019.
Dr Winter joined NTU as a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology in 2014 and became a Principal Lecturer in 2018.
Research areas
Dr Winter is interested in bacteria-host interactions with a particular focus on the causative agent of peptic ulcers and gastric cancer, Helicobacter pylori. She is a member of the research group at NTU within the Centre for Systems Health and integrated Metabolic Research.
Her main research interests include:
- Roles of bacterial membrane vesicles in pathogenesis, stress survival, antibiotic resistance and immune modulation.
- H. pylori pathogenicity
- Antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control
