Daniele contributes to other modules on the undergraduate degree pathways with an emphasis on behaviour change, sedentary behaviour, and ageing.

Career overview

Dr Daniele Magistro completed a Bachelor Degree in Sport Sciences at the University of Torino in 2007, and went on to obtain an Master's degree in Sciences and Techniques of Adapted Physical Activity with Laude in 2010 from the same institution. In 2012 Dr Magistro completed a PhD in Psychology of Development and Education at Torino University, Doctorate School in Human Sciences, in promotion of physical and cognitive activity in older adults with a focus on the relationships among physical activity, memory, cognitive functions and ability of daily living in senior Citizens.

Before joining NTU in May 2018, Dr Magistro was awarded a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer (Tohoku University, Japan) to study holistic-based approaches to behaviour and cognitive-physical activity in older adults. Afterwards, he was successfully awarded a RCUK funded postdoctoral fellowship at Loughborough University, in the School of Sport. Dr Magistro also worked on the project “Dementia House”: a world-first demonstrator residential building on the Innovation Park, Building Research Establishment to develop a Dementia friendly house to promote and improve health, life-style and well-being of the older adults. Currently, Dr Magistro is Co-I in EPSRC-NIHR  co-funded research project: I’M-ACTIVE: Intelligent Multimodal Assessment and Coaching Through Identification of Vulnerabilities in older people.

Research areas

Dr Magistro is a member of the Exercise and Health Research Group within Sport Science at NTU.

Dr Magistro research interests are focus on creating educational and social movement towards an active ageing society, promoting healthy lifestyles across the life span and creating the right spaces and active environments related to health and active life.

Dr Magistro had experience of conducting clinical research in health and social care settings, in long term care facilities and city hospitals with healthy people and patients affected by MCI or metabolic diseases. He had been focusing on different multi-disciplinary RCTs and longitudinal researches involving children, older adults, physical activity, and cognitive trainings based on the ecological perspective of health, always combining the needs of the research with the real needs of the population (children, elderly, patients), their life and social context.

Postgraduate Students

I welcome inquiries from prospective PhD students interested in ageing research, physical activity and cognitive psychology. Within those parameters, I am open to supervising a range of topics and issues including but not limited to those explored in my prior and ongoing research.
