Role
Professor Paula Moffatt is the Director of External Engagement at the Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Law School, NTU. She is also a Professor of Banking and Insolvency Law and member of the NLS Centre for Business and Insolvency Law.
Career overview
Paula studied law at University College London before qualifying as a solicitor in a City practice where she was an associate in the banking department. She joined Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Law School in 2003 and has since taught on the postgraduate vocational and master’s programmes, focusing on banking and insolvency law. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has experience of curriculum design and development in both the academic and vocational postgraduate arena and has developed specialist training for paralegals working in the capital markets division of the European Investment Bank. She is a member of the Law School’s Senior Management Team and a Professor of Teaching and Practice.
Research areas
Paula’s research has been in the field of bank insolvency, secured transactions and IP regulation. She has delivered papers at national and international conferences including the INSOL Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé London Colloquium (2022), the National University of Singapore (2019) and Yerevan State University (2019). Her doctorate in legal practice explored the conflicts of laws issues that arise in the context of intermediated securities and the consequences for investors on the insolvency of a financial intermediary. In 2016 she was invited to give expert evidence at the European Securities and Markets Authority Round Table on Asset Segregation and Custody Services. She is a member of the City of London Law Society’s Advisory Group on the Secured Transactions Code and the assistant to the Editorial Board of Lightman and Moss “The Law of Administrators and Receivers of Companies”, for its sixth edition (2017). Paula is an academic member of INSOL Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé and an invited member of the Conference on European Restructuring and Insolvency Law (CERIL: ). She currently Co-chairs CERIL Working Party 16 on Crypto-assets in Restructuring and Insolvency with NLS Visiting Professor Dr Dominik Skauradszun (Fulda University/Frankfurt Court of Appeal, Germany).
External activity
As the Director of External Engagement for Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Law School, Paula works with a wide range of firms, practitioners, universities, businesses and institutions and chairs the NLS Employers Advisory Board.
