Role
Professor Usha Ramanathan has taught UG courses with Supply chain Management and Supply chain Risk management modules. In the past, Usha has delivered several PG courses specific to MSc and MBA - Operations Management, Sustainable supply chains, Business Data Analytics in UK Universities including Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé, Northumbria University and University of Bedfordshire.
Usha has supervised several PhD and DBA students, including teaching to provide hands-on experience with Data Analytics using SPSS and Structural Equation Modelling. Usha is interested in practice-based research-informed teaching. She has been exercising this approach in her classroom teaching.

Career overview
Prof Usha Ramanathan was awarded PhD from the University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé, UK. She further holds MSc and MBA degrees. She has held a variety of teaching roles in India, Oman, UK and UAE. Usha is an active researcher having passion in pursuing research in current topics combining quantitative skills with social issues, such as sustainable supply chains and green collaborations.
Usha is a full time Professor in the College of Business Administration, University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, since Sep 2023. Prof Usha Ramanathan joined Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé (NTU) in March 2016 as a Reader in Supply Chain Management and promoted as a Professor of Sustainability and supply chains in August 2018. Before joining NTU, Usha was a Senior Lecturer in the University of Bedfordshire, where she was a course leader for Executive MBA programme running in the UK, Oman and European countries. She supervised many PhD students to completion. In the past, she worked in Higher Education sector within the UK and outside, including University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé (Teaching Assistant), University of Bedfordshire and Northumbria University (Senior Lecturer) in UK and Middle East College, Muscat, Oman.
Usha is a regular session chair for many international conferences namely EurOMA, POMS and OR Society, India. She has been a scientific committee member of the prestigious European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) since 2013. Usha regularly delivers special lectures and keynotes on collaborative supply chains and sustainability in international conferences and workshops. Usha is a Chartered Member in the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
Research areas
Usha’s research interests include supply chain collaboration for sustainability, role of collaboration in SMEs’ performance, Collaborative Planning Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR), value of information sharing and forecasting, e-commerce, RFID, Big Data, retail customer behaviour and loyalty in the contexts of service operations. Usha’s case-based research focuses on recycling, upcycling and Verbund concepts. She uses case studies and quantitative approaches such as Structural equation modelling, simulation, AHP and SERVQUAL in research and analysis. She has published in leading journals such as Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Journal of Production Economics, Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Journal of Operations and Production Management, Sustainability, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Expert Systems with Applications and Omega: The Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Journal of Management Science.
Some of her research work obtained high honours such as the ‘Highly Commended Award’ at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence in 2012 and 2018. She obtained funding for her research projects from the British Council, the British Academy, Interreg North-West Europe, Newcastle Business School and the Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé City Council.
Usha’s research proposal ‘Reduction of carbon footprint in UK food retail chains’ was selected for the PhD student scholarship from Vice-Chancellor, Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé in 2017. Usha’s research projects’ outcomes, including REAMIT () and several GCRF NTU funded projects were published in top-ranked journal articles.

Currently Usha is working with the University of Sharjah (UoS), UAE.

Sponsors and collaborators
Usha’s PhD was partly funded by the University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé during 2006-2009. She was awarded in 2017 a grant from the British Council–Newton fund to conduct a workshop in Unidavi, Brazil. She was interviewed by the local television channel during the execution of the project. The follow-up seminar was conducted in NBS with many collaborators from Brazil and UK Universities.
Usha obtained sponsorship from the British Council in collaboration with University of West of England to attend a workshop in Thailand on Short Food Supply Chain in March 2016. She also secured funded places to attend workshops in Mexico and India from the British Council.
Usha secured GCRF NTU funds, for three consecutive years since 2017 to conduct research in developing nations including Brazil and India on smart farming and Verbund concept. Usha secured Interreg North-West European funding as part of REAMIT project worth of Euro 540,000 for NTU. This project resulted in several research articles and exposed NTU to industries and other global academics as sustainable educators.
Usha is working with Academics from UK Universities and many other Universities around the world such as Palermo University, Italy; Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India; Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India; Concordia University, Canada; Monash University, Australia; University of Massachusetts, USA, PSG Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore, India.
