Martine Hamilton Knight DLitt(hon), FHEA, FRPS is a Senior Lecturer at Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé in the School of Art & Design and author of Photography for Architects (2024) Routledge. She has taught part time on the BA programme since 2018 and is a member of the university's Design Research Centre.

As a professional architectural photographer and Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, her area of specialism within the university encompasses a mixture of professional practice and technical delivery. Always one with an eye to life post-graduation, she is a passionate advocate of technical skill development and encouraging professional transformational experiences for students throughout their course of study. Martine leads a module on professional practice and her area of research is currently concerned with the impact of AI generative images on the built environment. She is the current External Examiner for BA (hons) Photography at Norwich University of The Arts.

Career overview

With a long established Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé business, Martine is an award winning independent  and author of (Routledge), shortlisted for The Architectural Book Awards 2024. Across the last three decades, her architectural images have been published in dozens of books and journals world-wide and she has had several exhibitions. These include a large solo show in Ningbo, China in 2009 and one at Lakeside Arts Centre in 2022 encompassing some 90 photographs from Pevsner’s Buildings of England: Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈéshire, published by Yale University Press. The final Buildings of England: Staffordshire was published in July 2024.

She was awarded an honorary doctorate by The University of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé in 2012 in recognition of her work, lectures across the UK for The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and runs workshops for The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and Line & Light.

Research areas

A member of NTU’s Design Research Centre, Martine is interested in exploring the changes in the commercial photographic world, with regard to digital technology, user generated content, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and and its implications on fee structure, branding, perceived value & client expectations. How these changes are subsequently reflected in education, training and the industry itself are topics which she is investigating.

(2024) is a 452 page book for Routledge aimed at industry professionals. It contains 485 colour photographs and encompasses topics such as the history of architectural photography, branding and marketing, working with journalists, legal and ethical considerations, compiling award submissions and project legacy. A section on making photographs tackles in-house procurement together with commissioning professionals and the implication of future technologies.

Martine presented her paper on Architecture and The Built Environment Seen Through the Eye of the Lens and AI - Does it Matter Which? at The Image Conference, InterAmerican University, Buenos Aires (2024) and was part of the Royal Photographic Society’s conference on Photography and Artificial Intelligence in Bristol, Autumn 2023 with her paper on The New Topographics: Man-altered Landscapes Become Machine-Altered Landscapes. Her article on architectural photography entitled:  was published by Quart Journal in summer 2022.

In June 2021, with fellow academic Dr.Rotimi Olaniyan, they presented their paper on Co-constructed Interdisciplinary Academic Practice in the Field of Visual Brand Communications at the Chartered Association of Business Schools’ Learning, Teaching & Student Experience Conference (CABS - LTSE 2021).

Sponsors and collaborators

Named a global ambassador for the photo-equipment company Manfrotto in 2013, (Vitec Group) Martine brought a collaboration with them into the university in 2019. To date, they’ve worked with BA Product Design students on Research & Design projects for Lastolite and BA & MA photographers in the form of an awards programme with another of their global brands - Colorama.
