Role

Dr Luke Siena is a Senior Lecturer in Product Design within the School of Architecture Design & The Built Environment. Luke's primary responsibilities include teaching across both BA/BSc and MA/MSc Product Design courses in addition to supporting research projects and research students. Dr Siena conducts scholarship research in the areas of product design, sustainability and design education and also conducts research in the areas of medical device design, medical product design and medical engineering alongside academics and members of the Medical Engineering Design Research Group. Dr Siena also supervises PhD students across numerous product design and engineering subjects/topics.

Career overview

Dr Siena undertook his first degree at Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé in BSc (Hons) Computer Aided Product Design (2008-2012); this was then proceeded by MSc Smart Design (2012-2013) and a PGDip Professional Research Practice (2013-2016). Dr Siena completed his PhD in 2019 focused on implementing smart materials and technologies for medical emergency airway access devices. During his time at NTU to date, Dr Siena has completed numerous roles involving both research and teaching responsibilities. Most recently Dr Siena has attained a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in HE (PGLTHE) and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) (2022).

From 2018 to 2019, Dr Siena was employed a Research Fellow in the subject of Medical Product Design as a member of Medical Engineering Design Research Group. Since late 2019 Dr Siena has commenced the role of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Product Design with teaching responsibilities across both BA/BSc and MA/MSc Product Design focused courses and is responsible for the supervision of a number of BSc and MSc students which includes a number of ‘live’ medical technology based student major projects who work alongside a number of healthcare professionals.

Research areas

Dr Siena's research interests include medical device design and engineering, 3D printing, emerging technologies and materials, and the accurate assessment and measurement of health outcomes. Dr Siena's current focus is based on investigative research relating to the use of smart materials and technologies for medical applications, specifically emergency airway access devices.

Dr Siena has received research funding for the following projects alongside numerous collaborators:

  • Medical Technologies & Advanced Materials Research Theme - Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Springboard/Pump Priming Fund -  Co-Investigator - A Novel Steerable Bougie: Design, Manufacture and Testing of An Advanced Prototype -  February 2021 - July 2021.
  • National Institute for Health and Care Research - i4i Product Development Awards (PDA)  - Breakaway Chest Drain Valve (Reference: NIHR204562). - Co-Investigator - April 2023 -  September 2025.
  • Ataxia – Telangiectasia Pump Priming Funding - University Of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé / Action For A-T - Virtual Reality Based Therapy For Ataxia – Telangiectasia Patients - Co-Investigator - July 2023 - December 2023.

Dr Siena currently supervises PhD students in medical device design, collaborative consumption and sustainability, and novel heat pump systems and energy consumption.

Dr Siena is also a Editorial Panel Member for the Journal Of Health Design

Dr Siena is also an external reviewer for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) for the NIHR i4i FAST (Funding At the Speed of Translation) and the NIHR i4i Product Development Awards.
