Open Research Awards
To reward and celebrate Open Research practice at NTU, in 2024 NTU launched the Open Research Awards. The awards were designed to recognise any member of NTU staff – academic, technical, professional services, or postgraduate researchers – who demonstrated a commitment to using open research practices in their work.
To apply, researchers submitted a case study of open practice(s) in a current or recent project. Applications were assessed on their commitment to making research more accessible, reproducible, reliable, and inclusive.
The winning case studies reflected a range of practices adopted by NTU researchers and research support staff, from co-design and production to open data, and pre-registration to crowdsourcing. Their case studies also reflect on the challenges, successes, and considerations of making research ‘open’.
Open Research Awards 2025
The NTU Open Research Awards 2025 are now open for applications, celebrating excellence in Open Research practices at NTU.
These awards recognise individuals and teams who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to openness, transparency, and collaboration in their research.
To apply, researchers must submit a case study of open practice(s) in their research practice, or within a recent project. Applications were assessed on their commitment to making research more accessible, reproducible, reliable, and inclusive.
Eligible applicants include:
- All NTU staff members—academic, research-only, technical, professional services, and postgraduate researchers (PGRs)—who are currently engaged in or supporting research at NTU.
- Applications can be submitted individually or as part of a research group, and groups may include external collaborators.
- We welcome re-submissions from unsuccessful applicants from last year’s awards.
- For PGRs considering applying, please note that you do not have to have completed your PhD to apply.
The winners will have their case studies published on NTU's webpages and be honoured with a plaque in an awards ceremony held at at the NTU Researcher Network Conference on 12th June 2025.
Applications open 31st March 2025, and applicants must complete the by the deadline of 28th April 2025 at 1 pm.
Results will be announced in the week commencing 24th May 2025.

Applications open on 31st March 2025, and applicants must complete the MS Form by the deadline of 28th April 2025 at 1pm.
The application form includes sections on research context, use of open research practices, outcomes and benefits, and reflection and lessons learned. Each section is evaluated based on the Application Guidance and Grading Matrix to ensure fairness and consistency.
For more information or assistance with the application process, please contact libopenresearch@ntu.ac.uk.
As part of our ongoing efforts to refine the review process and enhance transparency in the NTU Open Research Awards, this year we have introduced several key improvements to the application process.
Each application will undergo a blind peer review by at least two reviewers using a new Applicant Guidance and Grading Matrix, preventing potential biases. Career stage, esteem or any other characteristics of the applicant(s) will not have a bearing on the assessment process. Additionally, reviewers will be requested to engage with Unconscious Bias training prior to undertaking reviews. Details of the reviewer panel can be found below.
To further uphold fairness and consistency, moderation panels will be conducted to address any discrepancies in scoring against this Grading Matrix. This will ensure that evaluations are equitable across all applications and aid the selection of winners. Unsuccessful candidates can request reviewer feedback on their application, following the notification of results.
To ensure a more rigorous and representative evaluation of applications, we have expanded our reviewer panel to include colleagues from diverse disciplines and professional service backgrounds. These are members of the Library Open Research Team, Research Strategy and Operations, Researcher Development, and previous NTU Open Research Award winners.
