Emergency Services

Unit(s) of assessment: Business and Management Studies

Research theme(s): Health Innovation

School: Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Business School

Overview

Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé has enjoyed a close relationship with the three emergency services of Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé and Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈéshire throughout its history and for over 40 years the business school itself has had research links and collaborations focusing on leadership and management of the emergency services. This interest quickly expanded into a series of national and international projects. The former are facilitated by membership of the Public both the Emergency Services and the Governance and Management Special Interest Groups of the British Academy of Management while and the latter by membership of the Emergency Services SIG of the Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Research Society for Public Services Management.

Projects from the Fire and Rescue Services research programme formed the basis of one of the three ‘Impact Case studies’ that was submitted to the to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. This changed the way fire risks were identified, assessed and services reconfigured throughout the UK and increasingly throughout the world. Since 2011 the group have been producing a series of academic and practitioner articles, reports, presentations, commissions, newspaper and media articles on the policy development, service delivery, public assurance and value for money of the emergency services. In her last speech as Home Secretary, Theresa May announced that the changes to the National Framework for Fire and Rescue Services  and the re-establishment of an independent Fire Inspectorate that the group had campaigned for since 2011. An impact case study based on the groups work in Fire and Rescue Services will be submitted to the Research Excellence Framework 2021.
