Overview

The Nutrition for Health and Performance Research Group, led by Dr. David Clayton, investigates how dietary interventions and lifestyle factors affect health and performance. Our research studies the effects of dietary supplements on health and exercise performance. Our current work is focussed on turmeric supplementation’s effects on reducing inflammation and illness, and the role of prebiotics in improving gut and respiratory health. We also explore the impact of meal timing, composition, and exercise on metabolic health, appetite, and eating behaviour. Our work is valued across academia and industry, attracting funding from organisations such as Innovate UK, BBSRC, the Physiological Society, the Society for Endocrinology, the British Nutrition Foundation, and industry partners. Our impact is evident in media coverage in The Conversation, which has garnered over 2 million reads, as well as through collaborations with professional sports clubs, NHS partners, and Michelin-star chef Sat Bains. Through our collaborations, we aim to translate our findings into practical health solutions for athletes and the wider population.
