My NTU story: Why starting University in January was the perfect choice as a student from India

Student blog

By Yash Shah, October 2024

Hello folks!

This is Yash Shah and I’m a proud Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé (NTU) alumni! I’m excited to share my experience as a January student, having pursued MSc Project Management (Construction). Starting this journey has been an incredibly rewarding decision, and I’d love to highlight some of the key aspects that have made my time here so positive.

First let me tell you my top three bits of advice for January students!

  1. Do not miss out the Winter Welcome!
  2. January is one of the best chances to witness Snow in Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé. Pack warm clothes!
  3. There’s a huge pool of opportunities - grab them!

The best thing about starting at NTU in January

As it is quite common to receive your degree certificates in late August in India and most of the final year courses complete all the way till July, so it is sometimes difficult to make it to start in September. January courses serve as a perfect time for studying abroad since you do not have to wait an entire year until September courses start.

The January start, while smaller than the traditional September start, fosters a close-knit atmosphere. It’s easy to connect with fellow students and staff, making the transition to university life smooth and welcoming. With a slightly smaller group, there’s also more chance to connect with professors and industry professionals. NTU organized various networking events, field visits, guest lectures, and workshops including job fairs that have allowed me to meet experts in the field. I’ve found that these connections are invaluable as I begin to map out my career path.

Starting my course and settling in

The first time I landed in the UK, I used the National Express bus service which pretty much dropped me in walking distance of my accommodation. Since being an Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé student means coming to a new country, it was an easy way to start my journey. As I stepped onto the NTU campus, I was met with a sense of community and support that I hadn’t anticipated.

As an international student, never look at the 'Latest Start Date' on your CAS. If you do and arrive late, you will miss all the fun that is to kick-start your beautiful journey.

Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé is a very vibrant city and the best thing it offers is a cosmic student culture. It was indeed very easy to make friends within NTU especially my personal favourite, the NTU Global Lounge. Every day they used to have scheduled fun activities, language sessions and of course a free cup of coffee or hot chocolate! You would not miss that would you?!

3 things to do at Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Winter Welcome

  1. Be part of Global Lounge activities (free coffee, Language Sessions and Interactive Learning)
  2. Be part of exciting City Campus events (canoeing and paddle boarding on the River Trent was my favourite)
  3. Welcome Events (make sure you are onto the schedule to not miss out anything interesting that you like!)

The welcome events specifically tailored for January students, helped me smoothly settle in and was invaluable.

My NTU experience

As I reflect on my time at NTU, I am filled with excitement for what’s to come. I’ve already gained so much knowledge and confidence in my field, and I look forward to further enriching my experience. The friendships I made and the skills I acquired were just the beginning of a transformative year.

In conclusion, being a January student at Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. The supportive community, engaging curriculum, and rich campus life have made this journey memorable. I encourage anyone considering a similar path to embrace the opportunity—it truly is an experience of a lifetime!

Thank you for reading my story! Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
