Please note: This course is delivered through the Enterprising Ashfield project, which is funded by the Government's Towns Fund. Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé (NTU) is pleased to offer free (fully funded) places on this course to support individuals and employees of businesses that are based in the towns of Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield.

On this three-week course from Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Business School, you’ll learn about current and emerging financial technologies. From AI and machine learning to cryptocurrency and big data, you’ll explore major innovations driving the FinTech revolution.

Explore the latest developments in digitisation and financial technology

You’ll begin with a survey of the financial technologies landscape. You’ll learn what FinTech is, why it matters, and how it has transformed our daily lives.

After this, you’ll delve deeper into the technology itself. Week 2 will look at key developments driving digitisation, including decentralised finance, open digital banking, and artificial intelligence.

Understand the impact of FinTech and its role in sustainable finance

In the third week of the course, you’ll explore the impact of FinTech on society and the environment. You’ll learn how new technologies could help to improve financial inclusion and promote sustainable finance.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a knowledge of the technologies making waves in the financial sector, and your own ideas about where FinTech could go in future.

Activity 1: Introductions and welcome to the course

In this first activity, the Lead Tutors - Professor Jim Devlin and Professor Alex Brauneis - will introduce the course, explain what to expect and where to get help if you need it.

Activity 2: What is FinTech?

The week gives an overview of FinTech and the main factors that drive the FinTech revolution and outlines the main features of FinTech landscape.

Activity 3: What is driving FinTech revolution?

In this activity we will share some thoughts on the main factors that are driving the growth of digital finance and we start by asking you what your thoughts are.

Activity 4: Understanding the FinTech landscape

In this activity we will increase our understanding of what types of products and firms make up the FinTech landscape. We also consider some of the main challenges and opportunities associated with the FinTech sector.

Activity 1: Principles of blockchains

A blockchain is the technological foundation of cryptocurrencies. This activity explains cryptocurrencies and the building blocks that make them work.

Activity 2: Decentralised finance (DeFi)

This activity is covers decentralised finance – blockchain based, code-driven financial services without any middlemen that try to replicate traditional financial processes like borrowing and lending, trading and risk management.

Activity 3: Open Digital banking

Nowadays, many banking services are available 24/7 through online applications (digital banking). Making bank data available for third parties (open banking) simplifies processes. This activity explains Open Digital banking.

Activity 4: Artificial Intelligence in finance

Artificial Intelligence (AI) simulates human intelligence to perform tasks such as visual perception, speech recognition and decision-making. In this activity you will learn about AI and its significance in finance.

Activity 1: FinTech and society

In this activity you will learn about FinTech and its impact on society.

Activity 2: FinTech and financial inclusion

In this activity we continue by focussing on why some individuals find themselves excluded from some or all of the financial services that they need and will discuss the benefits of greater inclusion.

Activity 3: FinTech and green and sustainable finance

For our final activity of the course, we consider how developments in the FinTech area can contribute to our transition to a lower carbon world.

Activity 4: In conclusion

We now conclude our Introduction to FinTech and Financial Innovation course with a summary of the main things that you have learned.

James Devlin is Director of the Centre for Finance, Technology and Society and Professor of Financial Services at the Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Business School, Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé.

Alexander Brauneis is a member of the Centre for Finance, Technology and Society and Professor of Finance and Innovation at the Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Business School, Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé.
