Become a Sustainability Rep

Are you passionate about sustainability? Join a network with monthly meetings with the Sustainability Team to receive updates, provide feedback, and advise potential changes. We have programs for both Staff and Student Sustainability reps who also help organise, promote, and enable sustainability projects alongside the Sustainability Team across all NTU campuses. Training and Awareness

There are a range of online and in person opportunities for our NTU colleagues and students to learn more about sustainability within and beyond the university.

Colleagues will find a dedicated  Here there are a range of online learning modules you can undertake to gain further understanding of environmental management procedures, sustainability in the curriculum and sustainable research practices at the university.

The NTU Sustainability Team are available to provide training and upskilling workshops on; Environmental Management awareness, Spill training, Laboratory sustainability, Carbon awareness and Biodiversity management. We can also host department specific workshops or present at team meetings to support the creation and implementation of localised sustainability action plans.

Members of the NTU Sustainability team are also trained to deliver  training. Currently open to enquiries from staff teams, Climate Fresk is a 3-hour workshop that summarises the IPCC report in a fun interactive group activity. It is accessible to anyone at any level in the organisation. We can also refer teams to become trained in delivering these sessions themselves.

The Sustainability team run monthly staff awareness courses for all colleagues, including new starters. The training allows staff to gain an understanding of sustainability at NTU, understand their responsibilities as staff members and find out ways they can get involved with sustainability projects and events. All new staff are required to undertake mandatory training that details the University, reimagined strategy - of which our Embracing Sustainability commitments are one of 6 key themes.

Each year students are invited to engage in a sustainability induction session as part of the Welcome Week offer at NTU. The online sessions aim to provide an understanding of sustainability at NTU, introduce and encourage signing up for our Green Rewards programme, give guidance on sustainable behaviours, and highlight events that students can get involved with throughout the year.

All new course inductions for students detail the University, reimagined strategy - of which our Embracing Sustainability commitments are one of 6 key themes.

The Sustainability in Practice (SiP) certificate is a short free online module open to all NTU students and staff. This enquiry-based module is self-paced and introduces students to sustainability fundamentals such as the climate and ecological emergency, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and systems thinking. It is also listed on Undergraduates Higher Education Achievement Record and counts toward the Bronze Employability Award.

Carbon Literacy Training for Educators, Communities, Organizations and Students (CLT-ECOS) programme is a virtual training developed and upscaled by Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Business School, Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé, UK, in collaboration with the UN Global Compact PRME Working Group on Climate Change. It aims to empower educators, communities, organisations, and students to embed high-impact climate solutions in their personal, professional and community life.

Explore the best high-impact climate solutions available and embed them in your private and professional life. This free 6-hour online  is created by Å·ÃÀ¾ÞÈé Business School. You’ll have 3 weeks to complete the course where you'll learn how to become ‘climate literate’ to help you make climate-conscious decisions. You’ll discover how to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions of various human activities and gain the tools to choose climate solutions that have the highest impact, for everyone’s benefit.

Green rewards

Staff and students are making a big impact through the NTU Green Rewards programme by sharing their green actions and taking part in more sustainable and wellbeing behaviours. Through an easy to use, free app, you can log your actions, take part in monthly challenges and earn points to win prizes

Events

Each Year NTU host a Green Week of environmental and sustainability themed events and learning opportunities. There are also a wide range of other dedicated events from one off workshops and panels, to campaigns such as Fairtrade Fortnight

‎‎Organised by the Sustainability Team, Green Week saw collaboration across departments such as NTSU, NTU Sport, NTU Global, and academic schools. There was a range of practical activities,  educational opportunities and showcases of innovative research aiming to make a real impact, locally and globally, towards a more sustainable future. Funding for Projects

The Sustainability Team provides funding for relevant, ambitious, and effective student projects. When applying, student teams should be able to evidence the requirements, targets, and predicted outcomes of their projects. They can focus on all areas of sustainability, including carbon reductions, biodiversity, waste, water, and wellbeing. Get in touch if you believe you have a project that we can help resource.

Examples of Projects we have funded in the 23/24 academic year include:

  • Hedgehog Friendly Demonstration Areas with NTU Global Lounge
  • Each year the NTU Sustainability Team also fund winning sustainability focused projects at the NTU Enterprise Awards.
