The Carbon Programme Group

To meet our ambitious goals, it is essential that the whole NTU community is engaged as set out in the NTU Carbon Roadmap. We have established a Net Zero Carbon governance structure tasked with implementing projects across four workstream areas to deliver the necessary carbon reductions. These workstreams are Energy and Water, Transport and Travel, Supply Chain, and Partner Accommodation.

The groups work together to plan ambitious actions that will reduce emissions across all areas at NTU. These workstreams report to a dedicated Carbon Programme Group, consisting of expert representatives from Academia, Research, Professional Services, NTSU and the student body, and is chaired by the Director of Estates. Progress is reported to senior leadership.

Governance

The Embracing Sustainability strategic theme of University, reimagined states that NTU will be “recognised as the most environmentally responsible University in the UK”. Embracing Sustainability is a Foundation and an Ambition which contains four Approaches, including “We will set and meet specific and challenging targets for reducing our environmental footprint and ensure our campuses are exemplars of sustainable practice.”

University, reimagined has focused on promoting a Zero Carbon Culture. Net Zero Carbon (NZC) 2040 is an institutional strategic KPI and has following milestones:

  • Milestone 1 – By 2026, to deliver a 24% reduction in NTU’s total carbon emissions against a 2018/19 base line.
  • Milestone 2 – By 2030, to deliver a 50% reduction in NTU’s total carbon emissions against a 2018/19 base line.
  • Milestone 3 – By 2040, to achieve net zero carbon emissions across our built estate, 10 years ahead of the UK Government’s 2050 legally binding target.

Purpose:

  • Monitor progress of NZC and onward reports to senior leadership as appropriate
  • Review project proposals and business cases
  • Agree recommendations for activity to help NTU meet its Net Zero Carbon target.
  • Set and review Terms of Reference for reporting
  • Assurance of deliveries
  • Maintain focus and priorities
  • Agree and issue communications
  • Oversee carbon reduction projects and their progress
