The Project

Quantum is a self-sufficient AI Research Centre designed to operate independently while being accessible to the general public. The centre serves as an educational hub where visitors can explore real-time AI applications and learn how AI integrates seamlessly into daily operations. Simultaneously, it serves as a research facility and innovation centre, driving advancements in AI technology through innovative exploration and development.

Kieran says the building offers a glimpse into what the future of AI-integrated spaces could look like.

The inspiration behind the project

Kieran was inspired by the growing exposure and conversation around Artificial Intelligence. He considers that while AI is a hot topic, its true capabilities and limitations remain unclear to many. His project was conceived as a response to that knowledge gap, aiming to demystify AI by showing how it can be seamlessly integrated into real-world environments. By using AI throughout the architectural design process, from concept to completion, and continuing into the operational life of the building, Kieran believes his project offers a glimpse into what the future of AI-integrated spaces might look like. It represents both a visual and functional exploration of AI’s potential, created to spark curiosity, understanding, and dialogue

The project experience

Kieran says: "Working on this project has been a highly rewarding and transformative experience. It challenged me to think critically about the future of technology, not just in terms of design, but in how people interact with AI and how it can continue to evolve, adapt, and enhance our daily lives. As AI becomes more advanced, so does the scheme, reflecting the ongoing development and integration of intelligent systems in the built environment. It further led me to explore new workflows by integrating AI tools into the design process, including generating wall build-ups and checking compliance with building regulations."

Being part of NTU

Kieran says that his time at NTU has been engaging, fast-paced, and full of growth.

"The course enabled me to secure an incredible placement opportunity, where I worked on the Design & Digital Arts Building, an experience that played a key role in expanding my technical experience. I’ve built a strong and versatile skill set, developing proficiency in industry-standard software such as Revit and Navisworks, while also exploring newer tools like D5 Rendering. Alongside technical skills, I’ve strengthened my ability to manage projects, communicate design ideas effectively, and work confidently within a team environment."

Kieran believes that NTU provides a supportive space for students to explore their creativity and evolve as technologists, as well as rich opportunities for personal growth and development.

He says: "Some of my most memorable experiences at NTU have come from connecting with like-minded peers who’ve become my closest friends. From university trips to group projects and presentations, these shared experiences created lasting memories and a real sense of community. NTU has also helped me grow in confidence, particularly when speaking in front of an audience, something I never imagined I’d enjoy as much as I do now. It’s the combination of those personal connections and moments of growth that truly stand out for me."

Closing remarks

Kieran's advice to future Architectural Technology students is to take every opportunity that comes their way and don’t be afraid to step outside their comfort zones.

"The course offers a balance of creative freedom and technical development, so stay open to learning new tools and approaches, you’ll be surprised how much you grow in 3 to 4 years. Make the most of studio culture, ask questions, and collaborate with your peers, because that’s where some of the most valuable learning happens. Most importantly, trust your process and enjoy it; NTU gives you the space and support to shape your own path as a technologist."
